The goal here is to promote good habits at work such as eating meals on time, arriving on time, and taking breaks when asked to do so by management teams). This way, people won’t end up working themselves to exhaustion causing serious health issues later in life— dangerous consequences that would never happen in a healthy workplace environment first place.

A safe environment:

The workplace should be a safe environment for workers. For example, workers may have to use power tools or heavy machinery that could hurt them or damage their working environments. Employers should assess the safety of all equipment before allowing workers to use it and should keep equipment up-to-date with current safety standards. They also need to train their workers on how to use equipment safely and effectively without endangering themselves or others. Workers can easily become injured on employers’ property if it’s not safe enough for them to do as they wish.

Working conditions can also negatively affect environmental health by creating noise pollution, carbon emissions, vehicle exhausts, toxic chemicals, etc. Unsafe working environments harm not only workers but also nature as they create environmental hazards such as carcinogens and explosions.

Types of hazards:

There are many types of safety hazards at work – from chemicals and machinery to electricity fire, biological, ergonomic, physical, and psychological, all of which need to be carefully managed and controlled so that they cause no harm to people or property, or cause damage to the environment.

A Hazard could be anything. In many cases, the hazard is something as basic as a loose screw or piece of equipment. Not all hazards are dangerous and could cause injuries if touched by an employee. Employers should be sure to remove anything that could cause harm or discomfort for their workers regardless of how trivial it may seem. Even something as minor as an untidy workspace can lead to accidents if left unaddressed by management. By taking these steps, workplaces become much more conducive for both employers and employees alike.

Working towards safety and making your job safe and secure seems like a good idea no matter how you look at it— it promotes healthy living for everyone involved and prevents injury or death in the workplace instead! When it comes to dealing with workplace safety risks, the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has made it clear what the employer’s obligations are: “An employer shall protect its workers from any hazardous conditions which exist in the place of employment even if such protection requires that steps be taken to remedy the such condition and even if such remedy will be more expensive than the cost of compliance with the standard” (OSHA 2010). This indicates that even if the work being done poses a risk of injury, an employer must still take precautions to protect its employees.

Most of these accidents and mistakes are preventable if employees are aware of the causes of stress in their working environment and take steps to avoid them.

Many of the accidents that happen in the workplace are due to the stress that workers are feeling when they are working under extreme pressure. You should also try to find ways to manage your stress so you are able to stay calm and relaxed. You should make sure that you take time to exercise and meditate to relax and get rid of stress.

An effective behavioral technique for preventing stress is to replace a stressful behavior with a positive one. Employees, for example, will no longer feel compelled to follow a firm’s policies or protocols that cause them stress and tension if employers adopt a positive approach to safety rather than using punishments, fines, etc. to reduce accidents or violations in the workplace. As an illustration, accepting personal responsibility and taking care of your own safety at work is preferable to forcing safety measures on yourself for the sake of others as well as your own gain.

Implementing stress control techniques into work routines allows employees to avoid physical, mental, and emotional health problems by regulating their emotions while at work. For instance, some employers allow staff members to take short breaks whenever they feel overstressed.

Additionally, a ladder should always extend three feet above the landing it is resting on to allow for easy access for workers to climb on and off without the risk of overbalancing. ; must have safety feet attached to the ladder legs when in use. Most importantly, a ladder that is broken must be marked and taken off the job site.
  • Scaffolds should be built according to recommendations, with scaffold planks properly secured
  • Electrical grounding on a construction site should be checked every day
  • If the weather is wet, workers should use ground fault circuit interrupters to prevent injury by electrocution
  • If working in a confined space or underground, an escape route must be established prior to beginning work
  • Workers should get a qualified person to test the air of confined spaces with a detector
  • All personnel are required to be properly trained in the construction of underground facilities and in the use of all explosives, mechanical and electric tools
  • All employees working in close proximity to hazardous materials must complete an on-the-job, approved eye/face protection training
  • The employee must also be trained on the Safe Handling of Explosives and Materials, Emergency First Aid, and HazMat Awareness and Training
  • When a hazardous/toxic chemical is being handled or transported, it must be clearly labeled
  • Safety precautions are to be taken at all times during the handling of chemicals
  • All persons and equipment handling hazardous and toxic chemicals shall wear appropriate personal protective clothing as required by OSHA

Safety – a shared responsibility:

Being a responsible worker and minimizing the harm they cause requires being aware of accident causes and the various types of hazards available in the construction industry. The different stages of the construction process are analyzed to determine the hazards associated with each stage. For example, an inexperienced worker who is dealing with a live wire, a very dangerous substance, or a moving piece of machinery, may feel fear, worry about getting hurt, or may have an emotional reaction to their situation. If the worker is uneducated or doesn’t have experience in this type of situation, then they may find it difficult to think and act clearly, and they may be unable to make the right decision.

The other example is an employee who is not well informed, or who misunderstands the true cause of a problem, such as a safety violation. The emotional response is likely to be anger, frustration, or even rage. If this individual is not trained to identify the true cause of a situation, and to think clearly, then their emotional response may cause them to make poor safety decisions, or to make unsafe decisions.

Let’s take a quick look at ‘behaviour,’ its role, and its importance before we go into Behaviour Based Safety. Human behaviour refers to how individuals communicate with each other. As a result, one’s actions (what they say or do) will be used to assess one’s personality. It all comes down to how people behave, which reflects how they live their lives, face difficult or emergency situations, solve problems, and so on.

Causes and Effects of Human Behaviour:

Human behaviour study is a science that can help us better understand and shape people’s mental health. Good human behaviour will lead to a better environment. On the other hand, society has a significant impact on human behaviour. There is a need to concentrate and address such problems where human behaviour tends to harm people, social wellness, workplaces such as organizations and industries, and so on.

Human behaviour is influenced and determined by biological, personal, cultural, professional, psychological, economic, technical, and situational aspects. When we like something, for example, we treat it with good intent; when we detest something, we prefer to ignore it or react negatively to it (psychological). Environmental factors have also had an impact on a person’s behaviour, motivation, and other characteristics. Observing human behaviour, providing feedback, modifying behaviour in a healthy way, and sustaining those modifications in one’s behaviour helps in creating safe individuals, and environment, and of course, Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) does that. BBS must be given priority in almost all places, like schools, colleges, firms, factories, industries, hospitals, hotels, etc. in order to create a safe behaviour to an unsafe one.

Behaviour Based Safety (BBS):

The actions of one person have an effect on others and their surroundings, both directly and indirectly. While we may believe that human behaviour is solely relevant in our personal lives, it is important to note that it is equally required and unavoidable in the workplace. One of the most major elements that cause accidents, either directly or indirectly, is ‘stress.’ Stressed human behaviour causes major workplace accidents, along with additional factors such as weariness, overconfidence, and carelessness (failing to follow safety rules). Above all, ‘distraction’ may be the major cause of more accidents.

Certain behaviours have the potential to cause major problems. For example, if a person who handles, operates, or works with machines is in a depressed state, is negligent, stressed, or exhausted, there is a greater probability that he may be involved in an accident; these mishaps could affect a single person or a group of people.

Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) is an important tool for altering unsafe attitudes and behaviours. Apart from the occupational, process and other types of safety, workplace behaviour safety is particularly crucial since, in addition to unsafe conditions, unsafe behaviour plays a major role in causing accidents. As a result of this BBS process, employees learn about their responsibilities and may go “beyond the call of duty” when an emergency or need arises.

As part of the BBS process, employees are taught about their own responsibilities, self-awareness and stress management, the need to make ethical decisions rather than emotional ones, taking initiative, resolving conflicts, and the need for a cooperative attitude in the workplace. They’ll also receive guidance on “at-risk” behaviour. This contributes to an organization’s success because when employees’ behaviour is oriented around safety and clear work goals, the organization’s productivity increases.
